Many thanks for this!
One small comment: Paraview's --stereo option is not red/blue in
current Windows binaries! Users need to edit the source code and
recompile for that platform:

... otherwise it will use a "crystal eyes" stereo mode that is not perceptible
w/o expensive hardware.
As an alternative VTK-based viewer, VisIt can switch to a number of different
stereo modes on-the-fly:
