AFAIU it has to do with GDAL. If GDAL does not "see" big TIFFs then
GRASS is not going to "see" them as well.

In Ubuntu repositories there is libgdal version 1.5 and I think it
supports (by default) BigTIFF. I am not sure though.

I always build from source so I've never had this problem. Maybe some
Ubuntero who's running osgeo-binaries?

If you like to try compiling you'll have to spent some time but you wull
get all stuff running fine. Check the wiki [1] and Dylan's notes [2]. I
can send you also my notes on osgeo under Ubuntu 64-bit.
