[GRASS-user] labeling vector maps

Hello,
I have encountered several difficulties in creating labels for vector
maps. I am using the wxpython GUI on Debian and Ubuntu.
The Debian GUI shows the "Add Labels" (d.labels) icon in the toolbar
while the Ubuntu GUI does not. In Debian I have successfully added
labels by first running:
v.label map=MEX_adm1 at Paul column=NAME_1 type=centroid fontsize=6
followed by adding a labels layer using the "Add Labels" icon in the
toolbar. However, the resulting labels are repeated for every centroid
even when they have the same name (and type=boundary doesn't display
anything). What is the easiest way to eliminate redundant labels? I have
been editing the text file, but that takes lots of time. Also, accents
on letters are not printed even though they appear in the text file. For
example "Michoacán" appears as "Michoac n".
Since Ubuntu doesn't have the "Add Labels" icon, I run d.labels in the
command line. When I try to display the labels, an error is
generated saying that I need to define the display monitor. How do I do
this?
In both Debian and Ubuntu, I have also tried adding labels by right
clicking on the map layer, selecting "Properties" (d.vect) from the
menu, and then editing the Labels tab. No labels are generated.
This seems like the most straightforward way to add labels, if it were
to actually work.
thanks,
Paul
