Perhaps you have the coordinates above in the wrong order? It should be:
-projwin <Upper Left X> <Upper Left Y> <Lower Right X> <Lower Right Y>
so for Cape town you probably want
-projwin 18.29237  -33.67536  18.64871  -33.94925

Running 'gdalinfo srtmgdem.tif' will give you the bounding box (Upper 
Left, Lower Right, etc) of the original. This way you can see if you've 
chosen an area within the original.
