I guess that you can get them here:
 http://www.nationalatlas.gov/atlasftp.html
as SHAPE files and then import with v.in.ogr into a location in
Lambert Azimuthal Equal-Area projection as I understand from here:
 http://www.nationalatlas.gov/articles/mapping/a_projections.html
