   Nuts! I was applying r.null to the wrong map, no wonder I got NULL data.

   It sees that using the subbasin vector map to set the region does not
yield useful results; see attached screenshot. I'll try again after using
v.to.rast to on the subbasin boundary and using that as a mask on the
elevation DEM.

   The attached .pdf shows the subbasin outline (brown), the vector stream
maps digitized at 1:24k scale (dark blue solid lines), the weighted
r.stream.extract map (few dashed lines, mostly outside the subbasin), and
the unweighted r.stream.extract map (dotted areas, also mostly outside the
subbasin).

   Does this look like the region was not properly set?
