GRASS uses its own internal format (and directory structure) for data. 
You, therefore, cannot create a "project" such as nc_spm or spearfish by 
just putting Geotiffs into a zip file.

AFAIK, the GDAL driver for GRASS is read-only, so you cannot create a 
GRASS data structure with gdal_translate.

So, AFAIU you have to use GRASS to create a GRASS project.
