all v.- and r.-modules (also r.example) are no standalone executables.

they are only working within a grass session in a location/mapset (therefore
the basic information about location/mapset in
http://grass.osgeo.org/grass64/manuals/html64_user/helptext.html).

for starting a grass session in text-mode (or in any other mode), see
http://grass.osgeo.org/grass64/manuals/html64_user/grass6.html

start a grass-session in text-mode in the console by typing "grass64 -text"
