[GRASS-user] Use GRASS to convert route into group of nodes

Hi Everyone,

I am working on development of an android application which will be fitted
in school buses and GPS data send by these devices will be used to
calculate the ETA for next stops. I came across a algorithm in this
research paper ( http://ntl.bts.gov/lib/17000/17500/17573/PB2001102278.pdf ).
This algorithm divides a route into links and nodes which then are used to
calculate ETAs. In this research paper they have used MapixTM GIS by
Hyperdyne to divide a route. I want to know that can I do the same thing
with GRASS GIS. If not what other open source options do I have. I am a
total newbie in this field so any kind of help is welcome.
