done in r54865. Testing welcomed.

* if input is 3D and zcolumn is not given -> using z-values
* if input is 3D and zcolumn is given -> using attributes
* if input is 2D and zcolumn is not given -> using categories
* if input is 2D and zcolumn is given -> using attributes
