please try the latest build (494) of GRASS *6.5*. The GUI shouldn't
fail, it should print error messages about invalid map size. To help
fixing this problem, you could enable wx debugging by

g.gisenv set=WX_DEBUG=5

and to find debug messages related to ChangeMapSize() - you will
probably find one which will report 0 in width or height. Could you
send it to ML? Something like
