There must be something lacking in the
ask() function:

It should definitely do this.

Some Windows specific directory separator is needed,
perhaps similar to
http://trac.osgeo.org/grass/changeset/55135/grass/branches/releasebranch_6_4/lib/g3d

I think: worth a ticket...
