Such messages are rather unhelpful but also depend to some extend from
factors other than GRASS.

I would suggest to keep an eye on
- current computational region (menu entry or g.region -p to see it). Too
many pixels for your system?
- free disk space.

I heavily used r.composite in the last days to generate gigabytes of data,
so generally I would
expect it to work.
