Helmut,

   Now that produces really interesting output:

$ ogrinfo -al .
FAILURE:
Unable to open datasource .' with the following drivers.
  ...
   -> OpenFileGDB
  ...

which suggests to my naive mind the souce tarball is missing a projection
file.
