Hi Rich,
Please try GRASS_VECTOR_LOWMEM environment variable:
GRASS_VECTOR_LOWMEM
[vectorlib]
If the environment variable GRASS_VECTOR_LOWMEM exists, memory consumption will be reduced when building vector topology support structures. Recommended for creating large vectors.
See: https://grass.osgeo.org/grass72/manuals/variables.html
Cheers
Stefan

Subject: [GRASS-user] Large import runs out of memory
While trying to import (v.in.ogr) a large landuse .shp file grass gave up because it could not find 11+M (or G, I don't recall which) of memory. This desktop has 4G RAM installed and a 15G swap file. My builds are configured with largefile enabled. Are there other options that would allow grass to see and use the available swap space on the disk?
Rich
