[GRASS-user] d.vect.thematic: classes using strings?

   The three examples on the d.vect.thematic manual page use numbers to
define classes. Can strings be used as classes?

   I have a map of fish distributions in a river network. There are eight
species recorded in this map/table. I want to have each stream segment
colored by species and create a legend for the map. Is d.vect.thematic the
appropriate module for this? If not, please suggest a better tool.
