As you may have noticed, r.contour attaches attributes to the new vector 
map; these are stored under $LOCATION/dig_att, so you have a file with 
the locations of the labels. If you're prepared to spend some time on 
writing a script, you could transfer these locations to a 
$LOCATION/paint/label file that you can display with d.paint.labels. Hope
