Yes, GIF would be worse.

Well, yours is newer than mine
Maybe that is a bug in konqueror or openoffice.
However we should find out and report it, 
because it is possible to use some pngs.

So you don't need convert at all to get the wanted PNG?
It might be an open office bug then?
You could try gimp to get the image you need.
