Hi,
As the article on the web at Baylor says, Lorenzo Moretti's version of Grass 5.3 and 5.7 is a very nice and easy install. I have, however, run across one problem in a lab environment (in which we wish to run the application). I have written to Lorenzo several times but have not received any resonse from him. The problem must either have to do with either permissions or pathways but I haven't figured it out. It is as follows.
When you install Grass and the Grass demo data files it works great for the user under who the application and data were installed. However if you switch to another user and try to view the demo data (for example - the Spearfish data set) when you select the data folder the data sets do not appear. I tried setting the permission on the example data set to allow everyone to read and write but they you still can't see the data set unless you are the original installer (who has admin permission). I tried installing just the data set - but since students don't have admin permissions I was not given the chance to install under a student account. Even if I install the data as another admin account - the same thing happens. I can start the problem but can't see the data.
The data only appears when you install the full package and data set for a particular admin-level user. It won't work for anyone else. So it looks like I am going to have to give students an admin-level account on the lab machines for Grass to run in.
If anyone has any suggestions or observations I would love to hear them.
