There are a number of ways that you can contribute to help make GRASS a
better GIS system. Perhaps the most important way to contribute is to <b>write
high-quality code for solving old and new problems</b>, and to make your code freely
available for others to use. For inspiration, we have a <b>wish-list</b> of
<a href="http://intevation.de/rt/webrt?q_sort=area&q_reverse=1&q_queue=grass>projects"</a>
and feature requests. Just pick a task from the list. It may be a good idea to
send a small posting to a related <a href="mailinglists.php">GRASS mailing list</a> to
announce you activities (maybe someone will join you!).
</p>
<h3>C Programming</h3>
If you've <b>already written</b> a useful function or module for GRASS that you
would like to make available for others to use, please post it to the <a
href="mailinglists.php">GRASS developers</a> mailing list. GRASS standard
code should be written in ANSI-C. Messages sent to this list will be seen by the
GRASS maintainers, and will be considered for inclusion in future releases of GRASS.
The messages are also <a href="mailinglists.php">archived</a>, so even if
the code is not included in a future release, it will remain available for others to use.
</p>
<h3>Writing/Updating/Improving documentation</h3>
If you see manual pages or other documents which are outdated, grammatically
incorrect, to short, lacking examples, please don't hesitate to send <b>text pieces</b>
(preferably in HTML) to one of the developers or the related mailing list.
<p> Also <b>updates to the web pages</b> are welcome. Just use the contact address at
bottom or our <a href="../devel/bugreport.php">bugtracking system</a>. Please consider
to send text pieces rather than general statements to speed up the update process.
</p>
<h3>Translating GRASS: i18N</h3>
You would like to see GRASS talking your language? Please help to translate the
messages. No programming skills required! For details, see the
<a href=../devel/i18n.php>GRASS i18N page</a>.
<h3>Funding</h3>
If you find GRASS useful, consider <a href="commercial.php">providing
additional fundings</a> to continue its development. Even a modest amount of
additional fundings could make a significant difference in the amount of time
that its author can devote to development and support.</p>
<h3>Other contributions</h3>
If you are not a programmer and cannot provide funding or contribute code,
you can still help make GRASS better and more reliable by
<a href="../devel/bugreport.php">reporting any bugs</a> you find in the

extension to the internal GRASS database if you need to manipulate data

GRASS is developed by a worldwide network of developers who continue
to release new GRASS versions regularly. The main web site, the
GRASS development mailing list and further lists are hosted at
<a href="http://www.itc.it/">ITC-irst</a> in Italy
(SSI/<a href="http://mpa.itc.it/">MPBA group</a>). The source code is
maintained in a CVS server which is run along with the bug tracker
by <a href="http://www.intevation.net/">Intevation GmbH</a> in
Germany. The GRASS user list is hosted at Baylor University,
USA. Our project is supported by numerous
<a href="../mirrors.php">mirror sites</a>.

Most of GRASS Development was/is done by volunteers who are spending their
free time on this project. Other (major) functionality has been funded by
grants to universities for certain projects, which products were finally
integrated into GRASS. Many governmental organizations have been and are
sponsoring GRASS.

However, perhaps you want some special functionality.
Currently, the best is to hire somebody to actually add the functionality you
need. Contract for the development directly with the stipulation that
functionality be released and integrated into the Free Software
GRASS source tree under GNU GPL.
Students who are interested in GRASS anyway are often happy to
get some funding for their hobby. You can also hire professionals (see list
above, those companies are already involved in GRASS development or directly
contact the <a
href=http://freegis.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/~checkout~/grass/AUTHORS>GRASS
developers</a>).<p>
Consider to contact <a href=usergroups.php>National GRASS user groups</a> if
they have ideas to accept GRASS fundings.

It is likely that programmers will add the desired functionality for you.
Other GRASS users can benefit as GRASS development
is done similiar to many other Free Software projects:
If the enhancement is useful for a wide audience,
it is likely to be integrated into the GRASS main code.
