[winGRASS] cygwin/wingrass install problems

I am trying to install grass 5.0 using a win2k machine with 
cygwin.  Attempt one was using the compiled binary.  When running the 
install script it returns no gunzip found.  gunzip is there and 
functional.  Testing on another machine, it appears to have installed fine 
using the same downloaded install files on WinXPpro.  As an alternative, 
attempt two, I downloaded the source code for 5.0.1 to compile.  When 
running the configure it returns the error that the gcc compiler is not 
functioning.  Again gcc is there and functional.  Any ideas or 
suggestions?  It seems to be purely a cygwin problem.  Is the solution to 
simply setup a linux box again to run grass?
