distinction of Cygwin / Xfree or you mixed them up
to save word space.

Cygwin http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin is a unix
environment that runs under windows and the Xfree
http://cygwin.com/xfree/ is a port of the X window
system using cygwin. This port includes all the
libraries for development.

The X server that comes with the Cygwin port of Xfree
is the subject of your comparison with X-win32.
I have used X-win32 and have a license to use it.
When I upgraded to the version 5.0, I had problems
with Grass and some of my other applications. As a
result I still use version 411 of X-win32. Initially
I thought it was the X11R6 of X-win32 that was causing
the problems but it may also be the .Xdefaults file
which controls the fonts. I did not look further
into it since version 411 works and I'm more
interested in application development than in
debugging system level functions; although I have
fixed several of the X library functions in the
past.

Sorry I should have specified X-Win32.

Hi List--

Not being a CS person myself, has anyone on the list attempted the install
of GRASS on a PC running X-Win as opposed to Cygwin? If so, which build did
you use and have you had relatively good results?

Thanks in advance,

Ben
