I agree with the three ideas. Surely we all have something to add.

Suchith,
Maybe we should get that on a wiki so people can add ideas and edit? I don't have time today to do this - sorry! Trying to get the grant out and done.
Two other ideas though.
We need an item on the broad idea of 'Open Geospatial Science' in this Why Join text.
Somewhat related to that, has anyone heard of the concept called 'the Tragedy of the Anticommons' coined by Michael Heller [1]? It is a theory that suggests that the idea of 'patent thickets' (lots of patents) leads to people NOT innovating or building on advances because of all the legal issues they have to deal with to work with a technology.
That idea might be useful. Universities are trying to capitalize on patents for income (understandable, I guess) but that might lead to more patent thickets. An open science collaborative effort around geospatial analysis and methods and innovations in open source software helps to avoid the tragedy of the anticommons in geospatial science and technology.
I can probably write this up sometime in the future if you all think it is an important point to add.
Cheers
Charlie

I might add to the beginning text of Reason #1: "GeoForAll *empowers* students."

Hi Suchith, all:
Patrick Hogan made some helpful edits to the text I have on my lab's
site (thanks Patrick!), and I then edited it a little more toward some
possible useful language for the 'Why universities should join' text.
I'm sure there are other points to be made, but its a start. The text is
attached.
Suchith, not sure who is leading the update to the GeoForAll page on
this topic...
Cheers

On twitter just now a community leader made a comment that our
website (http://www.geoforall.org) doesn't clearly point out the
benefits for a university. We outline "How to Join"
(http://www.geoforall.org/how_to_join/), but not really "Why to Join".
I thought this was a good point, and now that we all understand it
more, it might be good to highlight this on the site.
