[Incubator] Response to Nick Bearman questions regarding CoastalME questions

Thanks for your email.

The initial core team of developer were Andres Payo (initiated the coastalme github site that was used for the Geoscientific Model Development), the second core developer is my colleague Dave Favis Mortlock (who forked the master into the testing branch and is the one we have been using since). It is in our plan to update the master one and keep the testing for more experimental developments and to minimize confusion. This is something that we are hoping we could do as part of the incubation program.

I created the original coastalme wiki (http://coastalme.org.uk/doku/doku.php << not active any more) when I was at Oxford University, and now that I am permanent member of staff at the British Geological Survey, we would like to migrate and update the wiki to the BGS EarthWise wiki (https://earthwise.bgs.ac.uk/index.php/Category:Coastal_Modeling_Environment) that is maintained by BGS and will allow the global community to contribute. At present we only have a minimum template of wiki in the Earthwise site as we are also hoping to develop this under the guidance of the incubation program.

Is not a standalone programme but a software framework where others coastal modellers can test their model components. In the original paper (https://doi.org/10.5194/gmd-10-2715-2017) we outlined how do we envisage the integration of new methods and models. For example, new developers from Granada University, needed to introduce a new geomorphological feature called ramblas (a riverbed that is dry most of the year but transport significant amount of sediment and water during heavy rainfall events). We provided them the vector and raster framework to create this new feature. We expect our community of developers to be a small community of coastal engineers and coastal geomorphologist with interest on simulation models able to enable them to understand how geospatial topo-bathymetry might change over time. Our outputs are mostly raster's and vectors and we are using the QGIS plugin TUFLOW to visualize the outputs. The community we are trying to create will be able to contribute either directly to CoastalME code or on the external pre-processing and post-processing geospatial tools needed for this kind of assessments.

We are mostly engineers and geomorphologist, and hoping that with the support of OSGeo incubation program we can enable the community of practitioners and researchers to contribute to and benefit from having this advance software toolset.

Dear Andres,

Thank you for your email. I have one initial question. I am not clear on the relationship between the repo at https://github.com/coastalme/coastalme and the repo at https://github.com/davefavismortlock/coastalme_TESTING. The TESTING one is a fork of the coastalme one, but the coastalme one has not been updated in ~6 years.

Also the link from the TESTING repo
http://coastalme.org.uk/doku/doku.php does not work.

I'm guessing there is some background to this, but it is confusing for us, and for any potential user.

Is there any further information you can provide?

Also, is this a standalone program, or a library that can be used in other environments (QGIS, R, Python, etc.)?

Others may also have more questions.
