Hi Jody,
Thanks for taking the time to clarify this.
I think there is an element of both open data and open source in what
Greenstand is doing, although I understand the distinction you're making.
Our primary objective is not simply to collect and publish tree location
data. We have developed and maintain an open-source technology stack that
enables organizations and communities to collect, verify, monitor and
manage tree data at scale.
The software is designed to be reusable by other organizations, and we
actively support partners who deploy or adapt the technology for their own
projects and contexts. For example, we have supported independent
deployments and forks of the TreeTracker system, including work where
another organization runs its own instance while synchronizing relevant
data with Greenstand's infrastructure.
So while the resulting tree data is an important part of our work, the
open-source nature of the underlying technology is also central to our
model.
That said, I appreciate that OSGeo may distinguish between projects
primarily focused on open-source software development and those primarily
focused on open data. The MOU/partners and friends route sounds like a
useful option, and we'd be happy to explore that if it is more appropriate
than seeking a formal association through the open-source project route.
I'd be happy to provide more information about our technology and how it is
being reused by other organizations if that would be helpful in determining
the best fit.
Best,
Cynthia

Hi Greenstand,
Your project sounds more like an open data project, rather than an open
source project. The goal is to collect contributions of new tree locations
- rather than collaborate on software for folks setting up websites to
collect tree locations?
Websites and services that share their source code - are not really
expecting re-use - like you do not expect someone to run a copy of your
website do you?
If you do wish to be associated with OSGeo one avenue is to contact the
board and sign an MOU to appear on the partners and friends page
