[Landsat-pds] IMD Files?

Folks,

I am seeing lots of files named things like
LC81560632015209LGN00_B8_wrk.IMD in some (or all?) scene directories
on the Landsat PDS archive.  Does anyone know what these are and where
they are being produced?
