I tried to reproduce this problem using libLAS 1.2.0
from .tar.bz2 source package as well as from the 1.2.0 tag
in the repo, but without success.

Shortly, the test program doesn't crash for me using Visual C++ 8.0

Gary, could you try recent libLAS built directly from the repo?
