Comment:

 I can confirm that the desktop background was loaded successfully when
 installed by logging into the liveDVD (through a virtual machine) and
 hence having the desktop running. (tested in 3.0alpha3).

 Hence I'm closing the issue.

 Hamish, desktop images do seem to show up correctly on the desktop (in
 3.0alpha3).
