 Sure,

 In order to assure that GDAL is working on gvSIG you can try to load a
 raster file like the TIFF from Natural Earth dataset:

 * Create a new view

 * At its properties changhe the CRS to EPSG:4326

 * Add the TIFF file under data/NaturalEarth folder (changing to gvSIG
 Raster file on the file type combo-list)

 You should see an error message and more details under ~/gvSIG/gvSIG.log
 file.
