Hum, the qix file generated by OGR utilities is certainly compatible with
GeoTools based software,
but I believe the .fix file is unique to the Geotools world, it's a
"feature identifier" index, also used
to have the shapefiles maintain their original keys in face of feature
removal.

Normally the .fix file is automatically generated on a as needed basis,
either as a result
of someone editing the file, or trying to access it with a feature id based
filter.

That said... maybe that's the problem? I mean, when in live mode, is the
code able to
create new sidecar files?
