During the build procedure we customize the desktop environment in order
to add the geospatial menu, the desktop items etc. We do not do this
customization on the packaging level: we do not produce derivative deb
files of LXDE.
Instead we execute:
https://github.com/OSGeo/OSGeoLive/blob/master/bin/install_icons_and_menus.sh
which customizes the desktop post-install.
To achieve what is suggested here would require us to fork debian
packaging of other desktop environments (GNOME, KDE etc) and make sure
that all applications work fine on those environments.
From my experience, every major GNU/Linux distribution has a dedicated
team of maintainers for each desktop environment supported.
Short answer: we could do that if we had enough hands to help.
