Yes, many text editors are capable of syntax highlighting R. There's
even a plugin for an R shell in Gedit (though last I used a couple of
years ago it would lock up a little too much).

I agree Rstudio is currently the best IDE for R, but also way too big
for inclusion currently. If unbundling of it's a dependencies happens we
can revisit.
