There's already an open data project in the foundation, although we
still have to formalize it. Nominally Jo Walsh and I are co-chairs of
this. The initial idea is to make the open data project be a gathering
place for existing projects, rather than a full-blown, new open data
initiative. You might also want to look at the project at
http://www.openstreetmap.org/ which is an example of a project we'd like
to include in the open data project.

This might be the next kind of thing the open data committee would want
to tackle. How we do that is still open. It could be that as a committee
we parcel things out to the existing open data projects, or perhaps band
together to set up an osgeo repository.
