MSE Studio Necessary?

Hi All,

I have read that the Studio product is not planned to be open source 
immediatley, but that a similar open source may be made available in the 
future.  I was curious if it is possible to by-pass the use of studio and 
manually establish the data structure to be read by MapServer?  Is there 
anywhere to find more information about this?
