I guess you could use

setSingleMapRequest(frameName,wms_id)

alternatively for this purpose.

Maybe add a new module in "Edit GUI Elements" (an empty div), with a 
JavaScript file listed under "javascripts". This JS file could contain a 
function with a setTimeout mechanism.

You could register this function that starts the timeout with the init 
functions.

I think it's a pretty cool idea, and I would love to see a demo if you 
have a result. If you need further help, let us know
