Jason / Trevor,

Tags don't actually take any noticable amount of disk space as I understand
it.  They are essentially just saving some pointers.

As for whether RCs are worth the trouble and name space pollution - that
is a matter of opinion.  I don't make tags for betas and RCs for GDAL but
some projects do.
