[mapguide-internals] Future Development Options for Web Server Extensions and new High Performance Viewer

I agree 100% with Dave. But I am going to play devils advocate a bit.

Autodesk is still the primary contributor to the MapGuide Open Source code base. It would be better if they received value from and fully supported any contributions from the open source community. After all, they have LGPL'd a huge amount of code under the OSGeo umbrella.

Perhaps I am a little jaded being an ex-Desker but I personally would like to see Autodesk receive more return on the investment they have made in MapGuide Open Source. A vibrant community making significant contributions to the code base with RFCs and bug fixes is an excellent way for them to receive ROI.

I think we are getting there!

Thanks,
Trevor

The MapGuide project is managed by the Project Steering Committee (PSC) which includes a non-majority of Autodesk employees.

Like any open source projects -- you can make any changes and improvements to the technologies. You can even distribute these changes without any approval as long as you do so within the terms of the LGPL (the project license). However, if you want these changes to be included in the project core, it is up to the PSC to determine if these changes would be acceptable.

Although Autodesk did play a major role in the establishment of the foundation, OSGeo is completely independent of Autodesk, and has been setup intentionally in this manner.
