openlayers does have this capability, but it's comes from html5,
flash does this as well, so it's not really an issue at all with any
client technologies.. :)

I wouldn't mind making some of the http api calls a little less verbose,
for example the tile api could pass the
baselayergroup/scale/tilerow/tilecol/format
in a single parameter, rather than the very verbose named parameters
which will reduce the http requests and log file sizes dramatically,
without moving
to a restful tile api
