[mapguide-internals] MapGuide Project Logo for LiveDVD

Hi Jason,

Ok. It looks as though not everyone likes the fish.

I still think there is huge value in having an official project logo on the Live DVD. If we want the logo to make it onto Live DVD 4.0, we will need to have it integrated by the third week of July. So we still have some time to come up with other logos. To get the logo ideas flowing, here is what I am proposing:

Now To June 16th - Elicit responses from the community to the following question:
What specific logo characteristics would you like to see, and how do they relate back to MapGuide Open Source?

June 16th to July 7th
Accept any and all proposed logos from the community. Candidate logos must meet the OSGeo guidelines (http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Marketing_Artefacts#Logo) and be recognizable as a 32x32 XPM image, a 48x48 PNG, and available as an SVG vector for large format printing.

July 8th - PSC vote on logo
There must be at least three logos contributed to vote. The winning logo should be selected based on characteristics related to MapGuide Open Source. If fewer than three logos are contributed, a generic icon will be used for Live DVD 4.0.

July 12 to July 23 - Update LiveDVD content with the new logo

After July 23 - If a logo is not adopted, The PSC will request "logo funding" from the community and contract a graphic artist to generate additional logos.

Is this a feasible approach? Does anyone have other suggestions?

Regards,
Trevor

I dislike the fish

- It's dead (I think. Looks skeletal anyway)

- It's an anglerfish that draws its prey in with its shiny light then
chomps on them; hardly the connotation we want as a project

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglerfish

- I'd be concerned that we may have some issues with misappropriation
of first nation / native american art style, but could be totally out
to lunch on this one.

I agree that a logo is a big deal, and I don't think we should rush it
because of an external deadline. Just use the osgeo logo if we can't
decide on one in time. The initial logo contest fell flat because of
timing and a lack of established community. Let's start this informal
and see if there is anyone artistic in the community. If not, we may
have to hold off on this until we can fund pro work.
