[mapguide-internals] RFC88 for review

Hi Jackie,

Thanks for putting the RFC together. I started writing something and then it grew, sorry if the below seems like a bunch of disjointed thoughts...it is.

I see that in the RFC it is mentioned that we "need to be able to load any given Web Layout with an initial view"; but can I get some more details on this. Why do we need to do this? What is the use case? The reason I'm looking for this is to try to understand if what we are doing is really solving something. If we're not sure (or even if we think we're sure) I think that a poll of the community could help us out here; and if it's already in some mapguide-users postings, let's add some of those requests verbatim to the RFC.

If the goal is to have a part of the map with certain layers visible then using center and scale will ensure that those layers with scale ranges that that contain the specified scale could show up. If the goal is to ensure that a certain part of the map is visible then I think that extents are important too.

For either of the above scenarios, wouldn't it also make sense to be able to specify which layers turned on or off? Use case: I've done some work and now I want to have someone else be able to bring it up and see the same thing that I was looking at (cf. google maps bookmark).

What are the limitations with what we will be doing. E.g., if I specify center and zoom, and the other viewer user has a smaller screen resolution, less of the map and perhaps some important features will be cropped out. E.g., if I specify extents and the other viewer user has a smaller screen resolution then some layers may not be available at that scale so some important features may not be visible. Can I specify scale and extents; what do we do in this case?

I guess, what I'm looking for is
1) more description in the motivation section;
2) limitations; and
3) a description of what we will be doing now and where we can go with this.
I think that trying to do 3 could be a lot of effort and essentially stop progress on the RFC so I'm willing to live without that, but if we have any ideas let's add them.

This sounds like the start to some much needed bookmark functionality; and I think is a potential GSOC project because it so interesting!

Tom

EXTENT means you don't need to make assumptions about screen dimensions either
