They are working on the obscurity problem by adding support for the SQLite SQL API in their latest release:

I think it's recognition by Oracle that BDB has finally lost against SQLite.

I wouldn't have any problems with that :)

BDB has always felt sketchy to me, especially with the security-by-obscurity
raw database access, but also because I feel totally lost with their archaic
backup/restore mechanisms.  Combine those with a nasty "commercial
distribution" licencing gotcha, and replacing it really makes a lot of sense
to me.
