Yeah... that's the one.

My temporary solution has been to create a new Legend widget (a clone of the existing one) that will render only a single node on the tree for a layer if there are more than 10 styles in the current scale range theme.  

The problem extends beyond the client also... testing on a single core server has shown it maxes out the CPU server side as it attempts process all of the GETLEGENDIMAGE requests.

even on q core i5 64 bit desktop, the browser will lock up for a looonng time

the classic ajax viewer in these cases simply only shows the first and last icons with ... in between
