[mapguide-internals] Raster Quality and Stability - RFC and Funding

All,
I have been in discussion with Trevor at OTX systems regarding improvements
to the raster image quality from the GDAL provider. As you will know, the
interpolation/resampling used by the existing implementation of
GDAL/FDO/MapGuide for imagery leaves something to be desired in delivery.
This is especially true for topographic maps with horizontal/vertical grid
lines and with text on a white background - where the absence of a raster
line can lead to unconsistent and ugly map images on pan and zoom.
The initial assessment of investment is out of my budget, but with a core
of, say, less than 10 partners contributing between 1000 and 1500 USD this
could easily happen. Raster quality is one of the last differentiators
between MapGuide and some of the other solutions out there to deliver a
comprehensive base mapping platform.
Though this RFC would be designed to address resampling/quality, it is also
hoped that with a comprehensive code review multi-threading performance may
also be addressed.
I am aware the MapGuide OSGeo community has been somewhat down this road
before so (as I am under new ownership!) I am prepared to put my £$ where my
mouth is by funding RFC documentation write-up... but only if there is a
valid interest that will ensure that (on RFC aceptance) the project has
funding to progress to completion.
I look forward to your thoughts and opinions on this topic.
Regards - Crispin
