I finally got it working.

There was some manual fixing of httpd.conf and php.ini necessary to get 
a debug build up and running.
There is a problem with alternating installs of release and debug versions
(probably due to name clashs between the 2 versions of libs/modules with 
the same name??)

Installing a debuggable server used to be a lot more straightforward and 
robust in earlier releases
(maybe cause of the new php 5.3?) and due to the naming conflicts this 
is quite obscure now.
