I just checked out the Sponsors link for the Apache Software Foundation http://www.apache.org/foundation/thanks.html

Wow!  Three Platinum Sponsors, four Gold Sponsors, four Silver Sponsors, and eight Bronze Sponsors.

From their 2007 financial statements, two thirds of their expenses are "Contract Labour", one sixth is colocation fees and the other one sixth is hardware http://www.apache.org/foundation/records/990-2007.pdf.
