Comment:

 the new version of fusion has switched all uses (including measure and all
 the  selection tools) of its client-side vector library away from canvas/
 ex-canvas to using OpenLayers vectors, which will automatically switch
 between SVG (FFox, Safari, Opera) and VML (IE) and work in all versions
 that we know of.

 I will leave this open for now but really this ticket will no longer be
 relevant in the new version because of the switch in technology.
