[mapguide-users] ECW and Raster Provider

Hi Ken,
I finally got it working. Yeehaw.

I started chasing some of this stuff based on your suspicions of an FDO
issue. I cleaned out everything in the c:\WINNT\Temp folder since it looks
like MapGuide creates and strands a lot of files there including
FdoATILSessionSwapFile's that are 0 KB in size.

One thing that occurred to me is that this server only has about 300 MB of
free space on the C:\ drive and the Windows Temp and Tmp environment
variables were pointing to the above folder (there's 2 GB of RAM and another
2 GB of swap file space allocated, though). So, I changed them to a folder
on the D: drive (which has 15 GB free) and everything now works fine. So,
it looks like the raster FDO provider was looking for some minimum file
space availability, and couldn't find it, resulting in the server locking up
very ungracefully.

I'm a happy camper now and hope this helps prevent this problem for someone
else in the future.

Thanks again.

Hi Andy,

I spent some time working on this today and, unfortunately, am still unable
to reproduce your error. I've got a Windows 2000 Server SP4, running IIS 5.0
with ASP.NET 2.0, setup with MGOS 1.0.1 Server and Web Extensions, with the
Autodesk FDO Raster Provider preview. Server, Web Extensions and Raster
provider were all freshly downloaded from the OSGEO site.

Using Enterprise Studio (release build 178.4) running on another machine
(Windows XP Pro SP2), I created a load procedure for the ECW file and
coordinate system data you provided. I previewed the newly created layer and
verified that the raster was visible, then zoomed in and out, and panned
around the image for several minutes without incident. I then used that
layer to create a map and a web layout, previewing both and performing the
same operations, again without incident.

The server architect (former lead for the Server programming team) was
perplexed by the symptoms you reported. We feel that the most likely locus
of the failure is the FDO provider. I've sent a request to the QA Manager
for the FDO project to find out if there are any debug settings that we are
not aware of that you could use to gather more information.
Unfortunately, he works in the Eastern time zone, so it is unlikely that I
will get a reply before Monday.

Regards,
Ken

Hi,
Have you had a chance to look at this further? Any clues you can provide me
on where I can look to try to figure out what is breaking would be very
helpful since the error logs don't show anything - the server service just
stops responding. Have you been able to use any ECW's succesfully on a
Windows 2000 Server using the .NET web extensions? The problem occurs with
any ECW that I try to publish, so I don't think it is the image files
themselves. But, I have uploaded one to my ftp server. You can download it
from: ftp:\\ftp.spokanemaps.com\public\Spokane_County_Hillshade.ecw.
The coordinate system is Washington State Plane, North Zone, NAD83 feet.

Thanks.

I am using the latest raster provider from the OSGeo site on the Open
1.0.1 server. This server also had the same problem with the prior MGOS
release.
It does not surprise me that you are unable to duplicate my problem as it
all seems to work fine on my Windows XP development box, it's only the
Windows 2000 Server production machine that exhibits the problem. I have
not verified that this behavior occurs on MapGuide Enterprise as I do not
want to install that version on my production server at this time.

Is there any debugging I can turn on or additional logs I should look at?
The MapGuide error logs don't show any errors and the Windows event
application log does not reveal anything.

Thanks for looking into this.

Hi Andy,

I'm unable to duplicate your problem on our test setup. You mention MapGuide
Open 1.0.1--which raster provider are you using? Have you verified that this
behaviour occurs on the Enterprise version as well?

Could you send me a sample or two of your ECW files to try on our test
server?

Thanks,
Ken Horovatin
