How to tell if map has been loaded?

Hi all,
 
Is there a programmatic way to determine if a map has been loaded? Like a
map loaded event/callback?
 
What I want to do is load a map and then place a symbol at a certain
location, but in that exact order. I don't want be querying the map data as
it is being loaded.
