Date support in expression language

What is the current status of date support within the filter expression
language? I seem to remember that the initial release didn't really support
the DATETIME type. Has this been fixed? 

Are there any date specific functions? (For example, a SYSDATE or NOW()
equivalent). Specifically, I am imagining needing to set a filter expression
which is the equivalent to the Oracle SQL 
SELECT * FROM TABLE WHERE (created + 7 > SYSDATE)  -- created in the last
seven days

In general, I am mildly concerned about the expression language concept and
what limitations it puts on us in terms of filtering. Is there some kind of
SQL based backdoor override that we can use for filtering which bypasses the
expression language altogether?
