Performance with joins

I have some general questions regarding best practice / performance when
doing feature joins.  

 

Is there a guideline or preference towards using SHPs vs. SDFs when
doing feature joins? 

 

If I have indexes in my SHP on the columns that I will join on, will MG
respect these when/if I convert them to SDF?  

 

Is there a guideline or preference towards joining with an external ODBC
source vs. an internal MG feature source?


Is there a guideline or preference towards joining internally managed or
external resources?

 

Specific recommendations and/or general experience in this area is
appreciated.
